Arrowtown Design Guidelines appeal resolved

There is good news for Arrowtown. The appeal addressing the Arrowtown Design Guidelines has been resolved early, and we are proud to have supported the community through the process.

Following last year’s Urban Intensification Variation to the District Plan, the Arrowtown Design Guidelines were unexpectedly removed as a reference document in the Medium Density Zone. Members of the community were concerned that could have set a dangerous precedent for future development in Arrowtown.

The Arrowtown Village Association appealed the decision, alongside Friends of Arrowtown Village, the Arrowtown Planning Advisory Group and the Arrowtown Charitable Trust. The appeal was funded by generous donations from the Arrowtown resident and business community.

The Environment Court has now issued a consent order that resolves the appeal. It reflects an agreement between Queenstown Lakes District Council, the Arrowtown Village Association and the key representative groups, reached before the cost of formal mediation or an Environment Court hearing.

Our client said of the result: “We had a significant win for our community largely due to the direction, guidance, and input from Todd Walker.”

Principal Rosie Hill and Senior Solicitor Lucy King from our Resource Management team supported the community through the appeal, from the removal of the guidelines through to this early resolution. Our team helps clients with resource consent and subdivision applications, plan changes, enforcement proceedings, and appeals to the Environment Court and higher courts, and it was a privilege to support Arrowtown through this one.

Thank you to everyone involved. It was a privilege to play a part.
